Flanders Fields

As we approach Memorial Day, we will be seeing people selling paper flowers to support veterans' groups. The flower is, of course, the poppy.

What is the connection between the poppy and veterans? In 1915 a surgeon named John McCrea serving with the Canadian army wrote a poem called "In Flanders Fields."
